How to get the most out of B&J Rocket ® Rasps

TIRE PRESSURE

Although most buffers are equipped with an air gauge indicating the amount of air pressure within a tire, these can become and are quite often found to be defective. Insufficient tire inflation pressure will create excessive heat. This excessive heat will cause short blade life and improper wear characteristics.

Blade Life

Excessive heat is indicated by the rounded off or polished look on the sides of the rasp teeth. This will destroy the blade's cutting ability.

Air gauge and football needle are all that are needed for accurately checking tire inflation pressure.

REMOVE ALL FOREIGN MATERIAL

Failure to remove rocks, stones, nails, glass, etc., from the tire prior to buffing will result in tooth breakage and distortion of tooth alignment. This can result in very short blade life due not only to tooth breakage but also to the extreme heat caused by the momentary flash temperature reached when the tempered steel tooth encounters the foreign material.

Note: In areas where foreign material is a chronic problem, it is quite possible that the alternative tooth design would be available to better withstand this abuse. Consult our catalog, representative, or contact our Glenwood office for assistance.

Foreign Material

Make sure that all rocks, nails, and other foreign material are properly removed from the tire prior to buffing.

 Prior To Buffing

Tooth breakage and/or extreme discoloration on the sides of the teeth are an indication that foreign material has not been property removed from the tread design.

PROPER RASP BUILD-UP

A missing blade in one segment will not allow that segment to be properly tightened. This will also result in blade breakage and excessive wear to pins.

Note: Another common problem is the unintentional doubling of blades in one segment. Aluminum deposits and breakage may also be caused by improper maintenance.

 Breakage

Carefully check the build-up of your hub to be sure that there are no missing blades or spacers.

 Build Up

This blade was broken as the result of one segment not being properly tightened.

PROPER MAINTENANCE OF RASP HUB

Your B & J rasp hub requires very little maintenance; however, the buffer operator should visually check the following areas on a regular basis. Example: worn, bent or cut pins, as well as worn or dirty spacers, can cause blade breakage. Carefully check the inside of each pin for wear or cuts. If the hub is not properly tightened when placed on the motor shaft, these cuts will occur. These cuts will allow movement of the blades during the buffing process.

 Check Pins

Check the inner side of each pin for wear and cuts.

 Wear

Check thickness of spacers for uneven wear from end to end. Keep spacers clean.

 Uneven

Be sure that new pins are driven in, in direction shown.

 Spacers

Be sure that new pins are driven in, in direction shown.

SPECIAL NOTICE FOR CURVED (CONVEX)  PINS

If your B&J Rocket Rasp uses curved (convex) pins, you cannot replace these pins yourself as a special alignment jig is required to assure the correct position of the curve in relation to the rasp center.

Please have your B&J distributor return your hub for rebuilding or contact B&J direct for shipping instructions.

REVERSE HUB

The entire rasp hub should be reversed occasionally on the buffer to allow the blades to receive even wear and consequently last longer — including buffers with rasp motor reverse. Periodically inspect used blades. If the tips of the teeth are honed sharp in only one direction the hub has not been reversed and usable blades are being discarded. (Not applicable to de-treading hub.)

 Honed

Blade from hub has not been reversed.
Note: Teeth are honed sharp in only one direction.

 Reversing

Reversing the hub will maximize use from each set of blades.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE

Your B & J Rasp should be used only with B & J Blades, Pins and Spacers. All B & J parts are made to the highest quality standards to assure maximum usage and safety. Use of non-B & J component parts in a B & J Rasp Assembly may cause breakage and serious injury from flying parts and will void any and all warranties.
